Babywearing and the "fourth trimester"

We carry our babies in uterus for almost a year during pregnancy, where they are kept nice and warm and safe, soothed by our heartbeats. But when this period is over and baby is born, a whole new world unfolds before us.

Babywearing is a perfect choice for this transition period, giving both mama and baby a feeling of closeness while providing a number of emotional and physical benefits for their development. These first few months after delivery are called the "fourth trimester" and it is during this period that baby needs all the love he can get to transition into this new, big world. What better way then with being all snug and cosy next to mama's heart?

It has been proven that babywearing and the closeness it brings stimulates the production of Oxytocin, also known as the "love hormone". This makes baby happy which in turn makes mom and dad happy, resulting in a more intimate parental bond. Babywearing also allows you to be much more efficient in terms of getting things done. Need to get those dishes washed? Fold some laundry? Or simply sit and read a good book while baby naps? Great! Just put your little one in the baby carrier of your choice and get on with your tasks. Best of all, you'll get to them with baby.

Benefits of Babywearing:

  • Strengthens the bond between parent and baby, as you maintain a closeness throughout your day, especially during the "4th trimester."
  • Aids in baby's development, both physically and emotionally. And did you know that a carried baby is generally calmer thanks to all of her primal/survival needs being met?
  • Decreases risk of SIDS and flat-head syndrome, while promoting neural development, respiratory and gastrointestinal health, and aiding in balance.
  • Allows breastfeeding to be done on the go, and discreetly too, if you want to be covered up. And as an added bonus, breastmilk production is boosted with close contact with baby.
  • Allows parents or caregivers to be "hands-free," while baby is in the carrier, and promotes exploring, discovering and navigating safely and easily without having to maneuver a stroller.
  • Promotes early language development. Babies learn by watching faces, and babywearing puts your little one at conversational height- "the best seat in the house."
  • Allows parents to see more of the world through baby's eyes. And your babies get to discover their new world from the safety and comfort of your body.
  • Fosters a closeness through toddlerhood. Toddlers can be worn too, reminding them of their "home base," and allowing that bond to continue as they grow.
