Why give to St. Jude

St Jude Children's Research Hospital is much more than just treating sick children for free. Read on and get to know all the wonderful things this hospital does to fight child cancer.

It's cost-free for the family and patient. Having or not insurance does not constitute a problem at St. Jude's. Every child will still be treated, regardless of having insurance, and never receive a bill for the assistance. The hospital arranges for travel, housing, and food from the moment a child is accepted as a patient. Parents also have at their disposal the Target House: a building that has 98 spacious two-bedroom apartments for the families of children who need long-term treatment.

Only life-patients at St. Jude's. The hospital follows every cancer-free patient for 10 years, or until he/she turns 18. At that point, they can also enter a program to be checked every three years, so doctors can watch for any adult-onset health problems that may have resulted from their illness or treatment.

Children continue with their education, even through treatment. The hospital has six K-12 teachers who work with the child's school to continue the same curriculum.

Research and treatment are priorities. There are more than 85 research labs on the premises, and St. Jude freely shares all findings with doctors and scientists worldwide They've got a massive childhood genomics program underway, which will result in more effective, targeted treatment for every child.

Increasing survival rates. Treatments invented and implemented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% in 1962 to more than 80% today.

It's a happy place. The children are simultaneously celebrated and made to feel as "normal" as possible.

Donations mean everything. In 2015, it cost around $2.4 million a day to run St. Jude. The majority of funding comes from individual donors despite the corporate partnerships with brands like Target, Kay Jewelers and Chili's Grill & Bar. The average donation is $34, so every dollar counts.
